OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH

The Media Center hosts a variety of opportunities for youth to gain hands-on video production experience in a professional setting.

We are currently accepting applications for Internships for Spring 2008. Read below for more information.

Youth Advisory Council

The Youth Advisory Council is made up of ten high school students who live or attend school in the Media Center’s service area. The purpose of this 10-month program is three-fold. Members learn to:
  • produce video content to air on the Media Center’s channels
  • be critical consumers of media
  • act as Youth Advisors to the Media Center and the community
Members meet weekly at the Media Center to learn studio and field production, editing on Final Cut Pro, and gain skills in integrating video with the Internet through the use of blogs and websites, producing, interviewing, storyboarding, aesthetics, creativity, project planning, time management, and teamwork. Members can earn community service hours or school credit.

To apply, download and complete the YAC application or complete the Online Application Form.

Internships

The internship program is open to high school and college students who live or attend school in the Media Center’s service area and have a minimum 1-year of experience in video production classes. Interns work independently, completing 5-20 hours/week through a variety of tasks:
  • crewing on studio productions
  • capturing field footage of community events
  • editing on Final Cut Pro
  • administrative assistance
Interns also gain multimedia Internet skills by maintaining blogs and creating podcasts for the Media Center. Internship applications are accepted every Fall, Spring, and Summer. Interns can earn community service hours or school credit.

See our Internship webpage for details.

We will accept applications for the Fall in August and early September. To apply, download and complete the Internship Application or complete the application online.

Volunteering

For students who need more flexibility with their schedule, but still want gain video production experience, you can become a volunteer. No previous experience is required, but volunteers can learn skills through our classes. Once certified, you can make use of our facilities by crewing in the studio, renting field production equipment, using our editing suites (complete with Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Adobe Photoshop, and more), all whenever it is convenient for you. Volunteers can earn community service hours.

Digiquest Summer Camp

Digiquest is open to students ages 12-17, and runs in weekly sessions Monday through Friday, 9 am - 4 pm throughout June, July and August. Take advantage of the unique and exciting opportunity to create—or star in—your own television program using professional production equipment. Work as part of a production crew in our studio. Take a digital camcorder out into the field and then edit your footage into a video short with Apple's Final Cut Pro, or explore the digital realm of movies, music, and motion with leading video, sound, and graphics software. No previous video experience is required.

"Field Production was so much fun. We had a blast making that and we got a feel for what the equipment was like."

"I really liked meeting all these new people that are interested in the same thing I am, and field production was a lot of fun."

"I enjoyed the studio production the most because we got to work with equipment that we can't use everyday."
