INTERN POSITIONS - Fall, Spring & Summer

The Media Center is looking for self-motivated individuals with an interest in working with a non-profit media production center. We are searching for high school and college students with video production experience who can contribute to and benefit from their experience at our organization.

Internships are unpaid, but you will receive free training and have access to our editing suites, editing software and field production equipment. Students can earn school credit or community service hours for their work. Each position has a 4-8 hrs/wk requirement but most positions offer flexible schedules.

Summer internships are 10-20 hours per week and include training in video and TV studio production, though some experience is necessary.

How to Apply

Internships are offered on a semester basis. Fall Internshps begin in mid September and applications are due by the first week of September. Spring Internships begin in mid January and applications are due by the first week of January. Summer Internships begin in late June and applications are due by the fist week of June. Please contact the Youth Services Coordinator for exact due date and more information.

Positions

Possible roles include, but are not limited to:

Website Assistant

The Website Assistant will be aiding our producers in digitizing and uploading their video content to video websites of their choice. This intern will communicate with the producers and make sure their needs are met. Intern will also be required to create clips for our website of our weekly highlighted shows. You will have the chance to create relationships with our producers and your clips will be featured prominently on our website!

Requirements:

  • Advanced computer skills
  • Some experience uploading to youtube.com, blip.tv and other video hosting sites
  • Some experience with video editing/video production (i.e. Final Cut Pro, iDVD, etc.)
  • 4-8 hrs/wk
  • No knowledge of web design, html, etc. is required for this position

Tape Library Assistant

This intern will be assisting our Production Manager, Becky Sanders, with maintenance of our tape library. This will include reviewing old tapes and filing them in the archival library, returning them to producers or marking them for recycling. You will become very familiar with Media Center programming and the content of our shows. Great for someone who wants to get an inside perspective on how public access programming really works!

Requirements:

  • 4-8 hrs/wk
  • No video production skills needed

49ers Academy After School Program Teaching Assistant

This program is a collaboration between the San Francisco 49ers Academy at Costano Elementary in East Palo Alto and the Media Center. This intern will accompany Rebecca Fisher, the Youth Services Coordinator at the MC, to the school once or twice a week to assist in leading a 6-8th grade video production after school elective class. Duties will include mentoring students and supervising video production work. You will also have the opportunity to plan educational activities for the students. This is a great chance to explore a passion for working with youth and teaching video production.

Requirements:

  • Video production experience including field production and video editing using Final Cut Pro
  • Experience working with youth is a plus
  • Experience with Photoshop or other video/photo editing software a plus
  • 4-8 hrs/wk, Tuesday 4-5:30 pm and Thursday 4-5:30pm, plus planning
  • May be required to work extra hours for field trips or events
  • Must get Live Scan fingerprint screening if accepted

Studio Production Assistant

This intern will assist Karen Adams in production of the Media Center shows by serving on crew, assisting the production manager and maintaining the studio during and after programming. There are 1 or 2 Media Center shows per night at the Media Center. Our shows are completely volunteer run and feature fascinating local issues, community members and entertainment. The intern would be required to crew 1-2 shows per week and help with additional tasks to maintain the studio. Intern will become familiar with how the Media Center works and how the studio is run!

Requirements:

  • Has taken or is willing to take a Media Center studio class (20 hr class over 5 days)
  • Interest in TV studio production
  • Minimum 4hrs/wk commitment
  • Can work after school hours/late hours (up to 11:00PM some nights)
