Introduction to Digital Photography - Understanding Digital Cameras"

This workshop session is intended to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the digital camera. We will explore how digital cameras work and how that differs from film cameras ... and why it is significant. You'll bring your digital camera and its instruction manual: we'll look at a variety of the functions and features, explore how to choose options to use it best. We'll talk about how those functions and features apply to all digital cameras. Of course, well also talk about how to choose a digital camera! In the hands-on we will spend plenty of time experimenting with taking pictures, changing settings, and, as usual, asking and answering questions to allow you to exploit your camera better in making great photographs. No pre-requisites. Students are required to bring their digital cameras and instruction manuals.

Digital photography for the Film Camera User

Photographers love the look and feel of film images. The advent of digital photography has pushed film photography out of the center spot of photographys interest, but digital image processing and the use of the internet both stand to offer advantage to the use of film cameras and extend their capabilities in several ways. In this workshop session, we will look at film images and how to bring them into the digital domain via scanning or capture with a digital camera. We'll explore how working with the scanned film image in the digital domain can enhance it, and look at how it can be a benefit in printing and distributing those film qualities. In the hands-on time, we'll experiment with scanning and optical capture of film images. And of course there will be plenty of time to ask and answer questions in order that you can take away a solid understanding of how digital processing can enhance your film camera work. Pre-requisite: #1 or approval of instructor.

Introduction to Lightroom - Essentials to Understanding and Use

Instructor is Godfrey DiGiorgi.

Recent years has seen the development of much better, more efficient tools that address in very powerful ways the specific needs of digital photography. Adobe's Photoshop Lightroom is a class-leading contender in this development arc, and has become the essential working tool of great numbers of photographers. In this workshop, we will explore the basics of using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to manage and process your photographs. We'll explore the import process, add captions, titles, and other metadata to them, and then learn how to sort and pick images for adjustment. We will examine the flow of operations in Lightroom for adjusting color and tone, cropping and spot removal. And we'll look at how to export your finished photos to finished image files for use outside of Lightroom. In the hands-on time, you'll practice the techniques we've discussed with either your own photos or with a set of photos provided, and will have plenty of time to ask and answer questions, allowing you to take away the basic skills for working with your photographs using this specially-made for photography tool. Introduction to Processing Photographs with Photoshop

Long a staple of the digital photography community, Photoshop keeps getting better and more powerful. We'll start here with the basics: this workshop focuses on learning how just a few of Photoshop's many tools can achieve great results with your photographs. We will concentrate on working with layers and masks, learning how these can be used to adjust an image overall or selectively. You will analyze images, learning how to approach the editing process from a basis of that analysis and understanding. Well discuss sharpening fundamentals and how to apply them. In the hands-on time, you will work with several image files to practice the techniques and cement them in your hands and memory. And of course, there will be plenty of time to ask and answer questions allowing you to take away a solid foundation from which to go much further with Photoshop. Organizing Your Digital Photography - Managing The Computer

It is designed to explain and make clear what different kinds of image files are, how and why they differ. And then how to organize them to best advantage for editing and archiving in the computer file system. Fundamentals of metadata ... titles, captions and keyword schemes ... and how they are useful will be explained. In the hands-on time we will spend plenty of time for you to experiment with these concepts, answering and asking questions that will give you confidence and security when working with your computer to do photography. Creating Black & White Photographs from Digital Images

Instructor is Godfrey DiGiorgi.

In this workshop, we will explore the fundamentals of making quality digital prints. From a discussion and demonstration of display calibration, we will explore the principles of color management and then delve into printing facilities with both Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. We'll discuss how to prepare images for sending to a print service. And review principles of sharpening with respect to the printing process. In the hands-on time, you'll put the concepts we've discussed to use and expand on them with question and answer time. You will leave this system with the printing process concepts well in hand, ready for you to produce excellent prints. Pre-requisite: #1 or approval of instructor. Class size: 3 - 8

The Black & White image has been a staple of photography for two centuries. The advent of digital capture and image processing has not reduced its importance to photographers at all, in fact there has been a renaissance of interest in rendering Black & White in recent years. In this workshop, we will explore the process of creating B&W with digital cameras and image files. Using existing images as a starting point, we'll learn how to see the B&W opportunities and how to approach the rendering using Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop's tools. In the hands-on time, you'll take some of your own or supplied image files as a starting point and learn to apply these techniques, while asking and answering questions to give you a great starting point from which to explore Black & White photography in the digital domain. Pre-requisite: #1 or approval of instructor.

Digital Stories

In a supportive, creative setting, create an autobiographical story with narrative, images, & music, or a tribute to someone dear. The workshop takes place over 3 days and two weekends. There is some preliminary brainstorming work and gathering of photos before the workshop. It's your option to publish these keepsakes or not.
